The small line running from the exhaust up to the engine compartment is there
to allow sampling the exhaust gas prior to the cat. when setting up the
engine.  Get the dealer to sell you a threaded cap (about 0.5-inch long) and
don't replace the line; they don't tend to last long anyways, and this way is
much cheaper.  They can remove the cap and sample from the front of the cat
when needed.

Headlights were poor when new.  Recommend euro lights; check the archives for
sources and prices.  Check the connection at the battery again (remove and
clean).  Use audi oil filters with anti-drainback valve to prevent lifter
noise.  Check the rubber hose above the injectors to see if it's cracked and
leaking or collapsing under vaccuum.  The car will run better if it is driven
regularly (BTDT).  Good luck.
