V8 limp mode

I've got a ninety one V8 that goes into limp mode for no apparent reason.
I've had into the dealer where it stayed for a month until they got a
replacement for the transmission speed sensor (which they said was the
problem).  It turns out that that wasn't the problem and no one can figure
this out.  It will run fine for days.  The one day, usually after some stop
and go traffic, it will slip into limp mode after starting out from a dead
stop.  If I stop and restart the car that will reset it for a while.

Does anyone have any experience with this kind of problem on a V8 quattro?
