Bell Housing Bolt Pattern Question

Is the bolt pattern of a 5 cylinder engine the same as a 4 cylinder engine?
 If not, what would one have to do to bolt a 4 cylinder VW engine onto a
transmission that was meant for a 5 cylinder?
