'87 5kcst speedometer problem

A while back my '87 5kcst's speedometer stopped working.  I have have
tried both replacing the speedometer (instrument cluster) and the speed
sensor on the transmission with working units but still it doesn't
work.  Are there other components to the speedometer system than these
two I mentioned?

As weird as it might seam, on my other '87 5kcst the speedometer works
but the odometer doesn't.  I also tried replacing the two units in this
car, but always the odometer would not turn regardless of the instrument
cluster I put in.

Any ideas?
