Re: What is Techron?

Just for anyone who's interested in what Techron is, I came up with a
couple of things:

I found the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for Techron at Cornell
University:

http://www.pdc.cornell.edu/msds/hazcom/442/170536.txt

It lists the ingredients as:

SOLVENT NAPHTHA, PETROLEUM, LIGHT AROMATIC C8-C10 -- 68%
TOLUENE < 0.1%
XYLENES < 0.1%
ETHYL BENZENE < 0.1%
POLYETHER AMINE 32%

Chevron's web site talks about the active ingredient being the polyether
amine that is listed as constituent #5 in the MSDS. Chevron's site says
that the concentration of the Techron in their pump gas is about 1/10th
that of the concentrate, and that the compound differs slightly between
the pump gas and the concentrate. The MSDS includes the NIOSH
number, so maybe someone can dig up some more information about it.

I don't know what makes a polyether amine special and couldn't find
much about them in my brief web searching.

Incidentally, the #1 effect of inhalation of Techron is listed on the MSDS
as "Central Nervous System depression".

There is also a supplier on the web offering the concentrate for sale in
bulk:

http://www.gloversales.com

They have it at $4.12 / 12oz bottle, but you have to buy a minimum of 72
bottles. =8-()

Thought this was relevant since so many people have recommended/use
Techron on the List, myself included (mandatory content)

Any ChemE's out there?

Best Wishes,
Alex
