I think Aleksander Mierzwa nailed the problem when he wrote that the
stop
switch isn't working. Same thing happened to my '89 90Q's sunroof:
it wouldn't stop between open and tilt and, in fact, when tilted, it
wouldn't
stop at the end of its travel and made an awful noise as the drive gear
ground away at the stopped cable.
There are two microswitches in the circuit (both are attached to the
sunroof motor assembly). On my car, one is blue and the other is white.
I think the white one is the stop switch. I checked the continuity of
the
switches with a multimeter and it showed intermittent continuity. The
switches were OK, but the contacts were corroded. The solution was to
flood the inside of the switches with a contact renewer (I used
Cramolin).
This required drilling a very small hole in the switch case to allow the
Cramolin to enter. I did this 8 months ago and the sunroof hasn't
failed to
stop properly since.
Another problem with my sunroof was that the drive gear would 'skip' on
the cable while operating, and the sunroof would lose its 'place' and
stop
before being fully closed. That problem was a worn drive gear (probably
worn from the above problem). I had a VW Jetta at the time too, with a
manual sunroof. The drive gears were identical so I swapped them. The
Audi's sunroof problem was solved, and the manual drive Jetta sunroof
didn't mind the worn gear. Hooray for my side!
BTW, see the Bentley service manual for the procedure on correcting
the position registration of the sunroof motor with the cable. It
simply
involves lining up a registration line on one cam/gear with a
registration hole
on the other cam/gear.
Good luck!
