MC knock sensor

I've been having an intermittent check engine light coming on recently. 
Dumped fault codes, and found 2142, which according to Bentley is faulty
knock sensor or open in wiring to knock sensor.  

Is there any particular place in the wiring I should look?  Is is common
for the KS to go bad?  I had a hyd. leak recently, and the red rubber on
the sensor seems very soft.  I wonder if this could have caused a
problem.

Any ideas?  Car seems to drive OK.  At first I thought it was the same
problem I had a year ago with a bad tank of gas, but that revealed a
different fault code, if I remember.
