Rust tips

I've got a couple little rust spots that I want to take care of before they
become a problem. >my< problem, is that I have no idea on the specifics in
repairing paint chips/scratches, and removing rust before repainting.

My procedure so far - use _small_ wire brush (appx 7mm in diameter) to
scrape off rust, (accidentally getting some of the surrounding paint) apply
some primer, sand a little, paint with car color, sand & polish, then apply
clearcoat. Poliish if neccesary.

But its _reallllllly_ time consuming to do a hundred little specks on the
front of the hood. 

Should I be attempting this with another method? I've also got slight rust
on another car, that is around the door frames, so this info will help me 2x.
