clicking relays...even more...

Hi!

Still got the dashboard cover off. New developments, hope this will
help me get some help on a diagnosis as I am stumped and irritated.
Today, ambient temp about 25 celcius, motor temp is at the 100 mark
again, the relays still click. The clicking has also been quite furious
at times. At one point the relays clicked and clicked while the engine
was hot (100) and then the temp went down to 90 while in traffic.
I went to an interview, took about 20 minutes, car had cooled a bit,
drove off and the temp gauge was dead. Restarted the car (I'm a
computer scientist, we reboot when faced with problems!) and the gauge
worked again. Came home, car stood again for about 15 minutes, then
got the dead temp gauge again. It came back to life later on. I checked
the multi-function temp switch, I put in spade connectors months ago
instead of the plastic plug. All the cables were intact.

Any Audi electrical genius can help with this? Or this eventually
going to wind up with me doing a rebuild along the lines of pulling
the motor and replacing every single sensor I can find, all relays,
tubes and fuses just in order to make it all happy again. Honestly,
that's the way it feels right now, previous owners seem to have been
uncaring scum.
