RE:It seems that the clutch in the 5Ktq (120,00 miles) will need to be replaced in the near future. I would like to know from people that have done this what kind of a job this is. I have done clutches in a '72 2002 and an '85 MR2. I don't like this job but I would like to save I'm guessing in the neiborhood of $250.00 in labor. Thanks for the input.R&R '87 5Ktq Clutch

Jim,
I did mine a little over a year ago. Flat rate was 9-10 hours at $50/hr
so I think you are looking at more like $500 savings!!! It took me
about 18 hours (I guess I'm a little slow compared to a professional).
If you have done others it should be a easy as it is pretty strait
forward. My pilot bearing was frozen and was a real bit*h to remove. I
paid about $350 for the parts but I have since seen prices in the $250
range.

Special tools: You will need the 12(?) point star driver that is used to
remove the front half shaft bolts (they look like allen heads but they
are not), my local auto parts has the driver for ~$5. Clutch alignment
tool - I used a plastic VW tool that my neighbor had, I think they are
cheap anyway.

I removed the trans. by myself but had my neighbor help with the
re-installation - it is much easier to wrestle into place with two
people.

If you don't have a manual - as a minimum go buy a Haynes at Pep Boys
(~$12). They don't have one for the Quattro but the non-Q one gives
plenty of good info.

Good luck!!
