Your problem is consistent with the alternator not charging. It could be
the belt, worn brushes, bad voltage regulator, blown diodes. It is most
likely the belt or worn brushes.
I had the same symptoms on my '91 200q at 235k km. The alternator
brushes were worn. Thank goodness for the voltmeter; the source of the
problem was not evident from the idiot lights. It seemed like half the
warning lights lit up!
I notice on the S4 that Audi has thoughtfully replaced the voltmeter
with a handy-dandy analog clock. Brilliant move!
