Audi switch to RWD?

My thoughts on Audi switching to RWD seem to have gotten wrapped up in the
C&D A8 debate, which was not really my intention.

I realize I'm preaching to the AWD choir here, myself included, but I
still wonder if Audi couldn't carve out a larger niche for itself if it
offered both RWD and AWD on the A4 and A6. If I understand Herr Piech's
master plan, Audi is supposed to take on BMW in the sports sedan market. It
seems to me RWD would help differentiate Audi from the Asian brands and AWD
would do the same with the boys in Munich, together better positioning the
brand as the premium European performance sedan company they aspire to be.
( Is it obvious I'm a marketing schmuck?)

I'd be interested in hearing from any FWD supporters out there and perhaps
some insight from our friends in Europe as to why FWD makes sense in that
environment.

BTW, I hope Dan's S4 comes with decent tires...
