Another viable solution is to remove the plate and press it firmly onto
a piece of cardboard or other material and move it around to abrade
away some of the paint on the raised letters, just enough to make
the lettering a wee bit difficult to read. It accelerates/simulates the
effect you get with older plates that have been washed many times.
It reduces the contrast enough to make it difficult to read in suboptimal
lighting and indirect angles. This works, BTDT. "Gee officer - mustah
been a batch of defective paint....."
