Yes it is quite a tight fit..  

You will need a long extension and a tall thin walled socket, size 16mm to get
down there.  I found that blowing the area with some compressed air before
removing the plugs will clear the sand and dirt that accumulates around the
plugs.  

Also for the removal,  I cheap pair of (I cant believe we had them laying
around!) long medical forceps that lock on and pull em right up..

Hope this helps,  I am at 82000miles and have seen done two plug changes so
far.
