in praise of car

well, i am on honeymoon, so have more time than i've had for a while...

'car' magazine is really a surperb piece of writing (not to mention
photography, and old passion of mine).

some excerpts from the april issue:

on the volvo v70r (come in peter h)
"confusion reigns. the original box-car gets more and more accomplished as a
thing to drive, looks less and less like a proprietary child container....

on the new 3-series:
"bmw's new three is fussier but flashier, perfect for next-millennium brixton

on detroit:
"to most people, detroit stands for social disorder and ecomonic ruin. dead
right as it turns out.

on the saab diesel:
a diesel is much better suited to an application where it runs at a constant
speed near its torque peak and at a constant load. in a ship for example.
oddly enough, its inventor disappeared pver the side of one in 1913. if only
he'd kept the drawings with him.

on number plates;
"i am not a free man i am a number [one for old 'prisioner' fans]

on the jensen ff:
"the pre-suzi quattro mongrel" [now that one dates me].

on us:
"[audi] appeals to discerning technophile bohemians. people who read [must
have heard about the q-list]. architects and barristers and creative types,
not managing directors or finance men. if these cars were people they would be
talented misgits [oi, i resemble that remark!].

this and articles on benneton f1, the astra f2 rally car, a piech interview,
and vw/audi's plans for a v10 5l diesel....

man, i should get back to work, this holiday is bad for my health...
