Aye. By the time you got money for those cars, those qualities a car nut
hold so dear isn't relevant any more. And if you have more money than that
to afford Italian (or other) exotics, no one else's opinion matters.
I remember few years back my uncle was looking at Lexus, BMW 7, and MB S.
BMW 7 was getting old, so he was chooisng between Lexus and MB S. After
trying Lexus, he settled for MB S. Why? Because he said the Lexus doesn't
have the prestige as MB S. Was MB S perfect? The MB S he got had bad ECU
that wouldn't shift out of 2nd gear, and had to go back to the dealer few
days after he got it. Few weeks later, the ABS system went down.
Was that MB S perfect? No. It's undrivable in the snow, despite all the
whoopla (MB's ESP) etc. (He drives a tiny Mitsu Mirage 4-banger in the
snow because it's FWD.) But he loves his MB S, because it showed that he
"made" it.
A8 has the potential to be driver's car. The use of aluminium can cut down
the weight without cutting down the size. And AWD can put the engine power
into better use than 2WD. But Audi execute A8 that well. The weight saving
is there, but minimal. And far as U.S. A8 is concerned, the suspension is
floaty as any luxury boats U.S. consumers come to expect. Bring in that
sport suspension package and AoA will be half way toward perfect. And
bring that S8 and S8tt, then there won't be any excuse for Audi to be
second rate citizens to BMW and MB.
