qlist changes...?
Dan,
If spam elimination is your primary motivation, couldn't this be achieved
by restricting the list to accept posting only from s*bscr*bers? I know
that this is done in some other mail-lists. I guess then the complication
is that a s*bscr*ber can only post from the address that he used when he
s*bbed. But it _is_ possible for anyone to request "alias address(es)" to
allow posting from other addresses.
BTW, I'm confused about aspects of your proposal. Would qlisters use a web
browser (not newsreader) to register and logon to your Qnews server? Then
they'd see their (personalized) list of unread postings and be able request
only the ones of interest--just like a usenet newsgroup (only not)? If so,
I guess this offers the ability to sort the subject listing by thread? That
would be nice.
But as others have noted, it's "pull" rather than "push", so my guess is
you'll get a lot more of the casual s*ubsr*bers--the ones who quickly quit
the qlist because they feel overwhelmed by loads of e-mail. Maybe, as
Martha would say, that's a good thing (keeping them). I dunno.
Or, would it work as a message board? I'm registered at a certain website,
but its message board the downside that you get no header (or subject line)
with each message. Every message comes up with a sender name (with an
e-mail link for direct reply) and date, but it lacks any protocol for an
official subject line or listing (as we digesters get). I believe that
particular site uses "Web Crossing" software.
If www access is needed, mightn't some people who access the qlist from
work possibly have problems with accessing the web (firewalls, etc)?
