The black book is what we used at the dealership that i worked at. For
example two years ago a 1990 90q20v with 160k on it was worth about
$4500-trade in in Ohio. we retailed the car for around $6000. KBB says
that my explorer is worth almost $17,000. I wish. try about $13,500!
KBB is notoriously HIGH, VERY HIGH.

The black book is printed every week, (SUV's every two weeks) and is
regional based on auction reports. KBB is seemingly what Dealers dream
of getting. or like Harrison said a starting price. It should also be
noted that the KBB retail price is including a warranty with the car, and
obviously if you buy from a dealer they have (or should have) a vested
interest in your being satisified, where as from a private individual
they have no further obligation (unless a legal issue comes into
play--Right Bruce?????) or care if they ever see you again.

So if you're looking for a car, get as many different prices from
different books as you can. hopefully you kno a dealer and can get
access to a black book. The subscription is about $50 a year and worth
it.

Just my $.02 on the subject!
