1) The 20v web pages have a ton of info on this.

2) The shop is partially right.  What I did, since I did not
want to cut into the doors, was to install a 4" Infinity 42i
(kappa series) in the dash, which fits with some minor
trimming.  500ud capacitors filter the lows, and the Alpine head
powers these.  In the rear, I installed infinity Kappa 50cs components
in the stock locations, driven by an Alpine amp.  
This setup sounds great and is about as good as you will get
without going to custom kickpanels up front.

I may also add a sub, which should help the overall sound.
