contemplating my Audi's navel

While lying beneath my '91 200q, waiting for the slow, drip, drop, drip of
the draining oil to stop, I noticed a strangely shaped part of the oil pan.

On the passenger side, more-or-less wraping around the oil filter there is
a small, two-pronged addition at the bottom (side) of the oil-pan. It looks
to have a capacity of less than 1 litre, and is attached to the main pan by
numerous bolts and a gasket (perhaps 3" x 10"). Possibly it's an
afterthought approach for getting more crankcase capacity? Some exotic
method of baffling (it's baffling me)? Anyone know its function?
