This is a good, easy-to-do idea for the fuel filter--one that I learned
from a neighbor who runs an Audi/VW repair shop. Nice idea for the oil
filter also, but those OEM black ones are a challenge for magic markers :(
I guess you could lightly scratch the  mileage into the paint with an awl.
Naturally, a sheet of paper in the vicinity of the owner's manual makes an
even better place for records, but I suppose many of us (oil-besmirched)
weekend warriors often defer record keeping 'till a more convenient time...
