Help needed: Audi engine codes

Hi all,

As some of you might know already, I'm currently looking into buying my
first AWD Audi. Local 'exotic car' dealer has a 1987 90q, which has
apparently had an engine swap. The label in the boot/trunklid has the
original code crossed out and another added. I'll take it for a test drive
with my VAG mechanic buddy on Friday, if it's still there.

Q: can anyone tell me the difference between an 'NG' and an 'SL' or 'SE'
(original printed code, near-illegible) I-5 engine?

I can recall someone writing not too long ago about a booklet containing
Audi engine codes- you'd do me a big favour by checking these out.
