Quattro problem guide needed

If I decide to get a quattro 5k or 200, what do I look for in the quattro
system itself, if it isn't working? 88 was when they first started putting
Torsens in the cars, right? I remember a posting that said that the centre
diff had completely worn and the driveshaft was almost not connected
anymore. How do I test for this as well as other problems? How does the
quattro operate (locks on and off @ mph, abs with diff locks, etc.)? How's
tire wear with the quattro? TIA!
