"The German car manufacturer Volkswagen is said to be seriously considering
entering Formula 1 as early as the year 2000. Rumours have suggested that an
initial entry was to have been represented by an Audi badged engine for the new
BAR team before talks fell through. However, the company are still believed to
be keen to enter the fray as both BMW and Mercedes go head to head in the year
2000. Speculation was recently increased by the company's bid for the English
Vickers Group who own F1 engine builder Cosworth. Last year, rumours suggested
that VW might be negotiating to buy Benetton and the team are still being
linked to a possible entry into Formula 1."
