RE: New S4 engine manifolds
I have not been keeping up on what is happening but when we started our old
style S4 manifold project my foundry guy said we needed to us a ductile cast
alloy called D5S. It contains 35% nickel and is very flexible. (Mount a
flange in a vise and beat the manifold over with a hammer with out
cracking!) A point of trivia when casting it shrinks .0194 inches / inch
when cooling. I haven't tested movement from operating to sitting
temperatures, but I would suspect it to be fairly great compared to gray
ductile cast iron.
Our new 1.8T manifold will be made of the same stuff and is currently at the
pattern maker.
