Re: US Servotronic differences pre/post July '93 (100/A6/S4/S6)

Peter,

not sure of any differences in the systems between the years.

On the wife thing, though, get an extra factory fog light switch, mount it
in one of the blank spaces, run some wire and viola! Cockpit adjustable
power steering. Nice!!

Subject: US Servotronic differences pre/post July '93 (100/A6/S4/S6)

There has been much discussion on how to disable Servotronic and leave
hydraulic only power assist. So I successfully tried disabling it both on
an '95 S6 wagon and later on a '93 S4 sedan.

I noticed that on the '95 car, the only difference was at very low speeds.
I did not get any more "road feel" at speeds over 25 MPH. However, with the
'93 car I got much more "road feel" across the entire range of speeds.

The Bentley manual has two different sections on servicing Servotronic. The
first is for cars manufactured prior to July '93 and the second for post
July '93. Is there some design difference between the two systems which
would account for the different behavior, or did they just change the wiring
at that point?

If there is no difference, perhaps the speed sensor input to the Servotronic
controller is not functioning on the '93 car, so it always provides maximum
assist? Or maybe the '95 car has Servotronic consistently broken?

So why not completely disable Servotronic on both cars? Simple, my wife has
a hard time parking it when she drives one or the other and she definitely
would notice this kind of change.

Thanks in advance,
-Peter
