Wheels repainting [2]
Well it's a done deal at this point. The wheels are gonna be refinished
Pearl White, as closely matched at possible to the paint on the car (which
I just realized he hasn't seen!). I've told my friend doing the work to
hold off from painting until I speak with him personally.
I want to thank all of you for the great suggestions and ideas that my post
generated. Some of them were excellent, some plain wacky (you know who you
are).
I did some homework on the cost of the paint, and it seems that the paint
price was in line for the three layers plus reducers needed to finish the
wheels.
I'll be posting a follow up to the list after I get the wheels reinstalled
which is approximately early two weeks from now.
Now for the problem about matching the paint to a car he hasn't seen. What
the heck am I gonna do about that!!! I think lighter will look better than
overly dark, but the car is up here in Albany and he is down there in
Elmira. I don't think a picture is gonna work either. Anybody have
suggestiong for that problem? Thanks. Oh yeah... the obvious solution is to
drive the car down there... but that simply isn't feasible. Why can't
anything be simple anymore!
Finally, I was very pleased with a phone conversation with Walter's
Autobody in the Capital district. Even though he knew I wasn't buying
anything from him, he spent at least 15 minutes going over many details of
matching pearl paint, and how I was better off buying a new lower fairing
(on a VW that needs work) and having that painted then paying someone to
sand the plastic down (since chemical strippers can't be used). I asked
around at my shop too to see what they thought of this guy. He got very
high recommendations. So if anyone is considering paint/autobody work, give
Joe Walters a try.
Thanks again folks.
