A trip computer is exactly what it sounds like.  It's used for when you 
stumble and fall to the ground, it figures out what happened. :-)

Seriously, I don't have one either, and I also want to put one(2) in my 
car(s).  Virtually everyone on the list who has parted out a car has read 
me ask if their car has one.  Never seem to find _and_ get one tho', so 
far.

To answer the question, I don't know what all they calculate.  I'm sure 
it's miles-to-empty, miles-per-gallon, etc...
