Auto-Check Problem

Driving along the highway in the 1991 200 tq today, and all of a sudden the
auto-check tone came on and stayed on. There was no indication on the
auto-check display (just the radio station info) and I quickly scanned the
oil pressure, voltage and water temp gauges, no ill indications.

Convinced I wasn't going to frag the engine immediately, I took the next
exit and turned off the car; the tone, of course, went off. I popped the
hood and verified all the fluid levels were good. I then restarted the car
(no tone), ran through the auto-check after startup, verified no bad gauge
indications, and drove off. Never happened again in 2 more hours of driving.

Any ideas?
