I have the same issue on my A6QW. The owner's manual says one thing,
the fuel flap says another.

I've been experimenting. The first few tanks were all 93 octane, car
ran just fine (like it should).

The last two tanks have been mid-grade (89 octane), and it still seems
to be running fine. No knock, loss of power, or fault lights. And I
don't drive "gently" :-)

Next week, I'm going to wean it completely onto regular (87 octane)
and see how it goes.
