noise

car '94 S4
Problem; on cold starts there's a weird noise coming from  the area to
the right of the transmission hump console. Sounds like a blender on low
speed grinding up walnuts. Depressing the clutch or engaging a gear does
not change the sound. After 2 to 3 minutes this noise disappears and is
not apparent for the balance of the day. There seems to be no other
symptoms.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
