This sounds very similar to a problem I had with my 
84 COupe GT back in 1996. It turned out to be the
fool distributor.

I didn't know about the little screen-fuel filter
inside in the fuel line that runs to the f.dist
back then... I hope I really needed the f.dist
since it cost me $900 + labor to fix.
