The quattro experience/pt. 2
Hi all,
A full day of washing, polishing, touching up stone chips and putting my
stereo in has given me a better view of what I've acquired. It looks like
it's been in the wars a bit, with many smaller and larger chips and
scratches (*tip: DON'T buy aftermarket touch-up paint. It _never_
matches!*). After four hours of going over it with a fine-tooth comb, it
looks presentable again, save for a large chip on the trailing edge of the
hood, where it interferes with the wiper arm, and a badly-scratched mirror
housing. It also seems to have had some door edge protectors in the past,
which have left more damage behind than they prevented.
Also, it's missing two of the orange posts to hold the mat down, one grey
coat hook, the 'quattro' emblem on the grill (which was actually an 80
grill- I've changed it for the 90 item I bought from Chris S last summer)
and the 'quattro' emblem on the trunklid seems to be an UrQ item in black.
I'll get rid of that, too, and fit the small chrome 'quattro' emblem that
late-80s cars had. Anyone know the part number? It's about 3-4in long.
Apart from that, I'll have to clean the fuel pump soon (I've come to know
the 'hornets nest' sound very well, it's even audible in the car when
driving slowly). No rust, no serious hidden damage so far.
Oh, and those stock Audi speakers (woofers made by ITT, tweeters 'standing
up') sounds far better than my previous very expensive 3-way Pioneers ever
did. I've wired the stereo separate from the ignition, and its supply wires
seem to be a lot larger than those in my previous 80- whenever I turned the
volume up a bit, I saw the display of the head unit flicker in time with
the music. I'm not going to replace this stuff anytime soon.
