Re: I don't understand the bomb!



The "bomb" or hydraulic pressure accumulator is on Audis that use the
same hydraulic pressure system to assist the power brakes and steering. 
It is a little sphere that resembles a German WW2 hand grenade or
something, hence "the bomb".  It functions like the tanks used on home
well water systems and FHW heating systems - inside it there is a
diaphragm with pressurised gas on one side, and the pumped to pressure
fluid on the other.  It stores some pressure in the system and evens out
its availability during use.

And it leaks and has to be replaced every few years I guess.  If I
bought an urq I would retrofit seperate systems: vacuum brakes and
simple power steering like on my coupe, the first time the bomb or the
rack went bad.  I spend enough time off boost to ensure sufficient
vacuum storage for the brakes.  Heck, I spend most of my time on cruise
control.  Ho hum.
