Big Red's
No flames please.
The value of great brakes is subjective.
The value of more power is subjective.
In my personal opinion, the brakes on S4's (2.2L) are inadequate for the
speed
that is possible in this car. The dynamics between chassis and motor are
inequitably
distributed.
Most guys seem to choose spending dough on speed or optics (wheels,
spoilers, etc.) before they spend money on the chassis.
I my case, I am choosing to beef up the chassis before I spend on the
motor.
Are big reds worth it? I will find out.
The reliability of Porsche Brembos is by many racing folk's opinion far
superior
than Wilwoods on street cars that do not get their calipers rebuilt
often and are exposed to bad weather and etc. According to BAER, AP's
do not have the same dust/dirt seals that the big brembos have. Also in
their opion, Alcon's are very expensive, and the choice of many racers
and Audi for their show cars, but the Brembos have full respect.
According to the engineers at Porsche in Ludwigsburg/Zuffenhausen that I
have spoken to, in their research, the Brembo's in general and their Big
Reds in particular ( and there are several sizes of Big Reds) are the
most reliable and best brakes they can offer on their cars. That is good
enough for me.
Porsche has done a lot of home work, and their rotors that they specify
for the Big Reds are vastly superior to Colemans, Wilwoods, etc.
There is a lot to say for 993TT brakes. S4's, 91 200 TQ's need better
brakes.
S4 4.2's and S6+ are endowed with much beefier 2 pots, but these pale in
comparison to the Big Reds. In my personal opinion you can never stop
soon enough.
My two cents.
