this sort of thing imho, here in nz, is racially driven. in nz, germans are
mostly forgiven by the old soldiers, while the japanese aren't.
reminds me of an interview with charles upham the (recently deceased) kiwi who
won 2 victoria crosses in the western desert during 1941-42 in the nz division
of the 8th army. asked how he had become the only person in living memory with
a bar to a vc, he just said "i hated germans".
