If the bolt wasn't properly torqued the pulley would osscilate back and 
forth slightly.This osscilation would eventually cause the key to fail
since there is a minute amount of clearance between the key and it's 
keyway.The likely result is a sheared key and the resulting damage to the 
head.The "8 month defense" is a lame one at best.I have never heard of a 
key failure on a reperly torqued pulley unless the rotating parts were 
severely out of balance.In the out of balance scenario you would have
noticed it before it failed.Lawn mower (small engines of all kinds) are 
prone to key shearing if the flywheel is not tightened properly or the
key is not replaced if at all damaged.
