Interesting light trick
Hi again,
For those who want to run aux lights in the bumper and are trying to figure
what to do with the turn signals try this: Go to local pnp junkyard and
pick up the Hella turn signal sockets from an early '84 (or '85 I think).
Paid something like $5 for the ones I picked out. Check to make sure they
use the double contact base for a type 1157 bulb. Cut the turn signal
harness right back where it splits off from the main harness and take the
intermediate 3 prong inline connector with it. When you get home, crimp
male quick disconnects on the ends of the 3 wires for each turn signal
harness. Take the marker side lights and cut the harness leaving a couple
of inches off the end of the old bulb and socket and crimp on female
disconnects (don't throw away old bulb and connectors). Do the same with
the single contact turn signal bulbs. Now carefully reach inside and push
in the retaining tab on the side marker housing and slide it out of the
grill. Take your turn signal sockets and new 1157 bulbs and install them
into the side marker housing. Its a little tight at first cause the wiring
faces the marker housing, but when locked into position there's plenty of
clearance. Run free end of harness thru the light opening and connect the
wires. The color codes even match. For the common ground return, use the
brown wire from the turn signal-its a heavier gauge. Now you have
combination marker lights and turn signal lights and have the added benefit
that someone perpendicular to you can now tell you're signalling for a left
turn.
If you've got the sucky turbo lights (and you're still saving $700 for Euro
H4/H1 headlights), do the exact same thing except put a amber 1157A bulb in
the socket. Dump the stupid parking light next to the headlight and put the
new turn signal there. Fits perfectly in both cases and even has nice
o-ring to seal out moisture :^)
This change was inspired by a fellow lister who put driving lights in the
bumper and Blaufergnugen who wants $300 (or was it $400) for kit to do the
same. Takes about a hour, tops. Now those turn signal holes are free to
mount driving lights and please aim 'em correctly so you don't blind
everyone else with your awesome light output.
Regards,
Tony
