Suggestions on '89 90 - project car

Hey all, in my quest to find a Quattro, I a ran across a 1989 pearl 90 in
the local trader rag.  The price caught my eye, less than $3K.  I called
and the owners mother gave me the details... 'Is it a Quattro, I asked?
Uh, I think so, what does that mean? She says.  Um 4 wheel drive...' , you
know how it goes.  Bad news is, it is a non Quattro, very clean body, so-so
grey leather, runs *real* rough and the trans is slipping bad.  Good news
is probably get it for sub $2K, as the mother is real motivated to get it
out of her hair.  So I'm thinking to myself that this is the perfect
project car....................

My questions to the list are this - If I purchase this car, I would like to
obtain a parts 90q and transfer the running gear.  Is this realistic?  Do
the q's & non-q share the same pans?  I know Eclipses don't, so to fit an
awd system to it is *realistically* not possible.  How much pain would be
involved in putting a turbo MC in a 90?  Any BTDT?  If I pass, is anyone is
looking for a cheap parts car, let me know.
