Fuel Pressure Regulator

Anyone have any experience with these things failing? I'm still
trying to diagnose my dead '89 100Q, and this may be a culprit.

The symptoms are that it turns over just fine, will idle just
fine forever, and will hit full throttle for 2-3 seconds at
startup. After that, any attempt to get on throttle past idle
will cause sputter/backfire at 1500 RPM, with ZERO power.

New fuel filter, fuel pump looks OK (seems to pump plenty of
fuel in a short informal test). Knowledgable parts guy says
it sounds like the FPR, which would make sense. But the part
is $265, and looks like a B*TCH to get at.
