RE: I5 oil usage
I have to concur here. All of my previous Audis(75 Fox, three 78 Fox's,
83 4ks, 85 4ks, 86 4ks,) and my 90 Passat Wagon all use/used practically
no oil between 7500 mile changes. My current 89 90q uses a quart about
every 1500 miles. I am hoping that a hone/ring job will clear up this
problem (I don't consider it to be normal usage)

Ditto. I usually change the Mobil1 when the car gets a quart down - no
sense in adding a quart and then draining it out again soon. The 170,000
88 5KTQ sea-dan goes >5,000 Miles easily before down a quart. The
180,000 87 5KTQW goes 8,000 Miles before down a quart. The 88 gets
driven a lot harder and @ ~80 MPH for commuting for hours at a time
where the 87 is more of a 'family taxi'.

Wow, these oil consumptions are incredible. My '91 200q uses 1/2
litre
every 8000 km at 250k km on the car. The oil is dark amber at oil change
(8000 km), not jet black like my North American vehicles. My '86 5kcstq
was
the same; it used no oil at 180k km and the oil did not come out black
either. I've always been impressed with Audi's low oil usage and the
cleanliness of the oil; I put it down to good piston sealing and oil
control. I always thought 800 miles per quart of oil was rebuild time!
