Towing Quattros - Ur-Q Slant

All this talk about towing finally rang a bell in my memory.  When my '83
Ur-Q expired last year, my friend and I towed it about 3 to 4 miles back to
my home.

It sounds now like this might have done it mischief, although nothing was
immediately apparent.  It has subsequently developed the strange humming
noise between 50 and 60 mph which I posted to the list about 6 months ago,
although this is much less evident now that spring and summer have come
along.

I guess my question is what damage is done by towing (I assume to the
diffs), and how does it manifest itself?
