Someone mentioned that the factor affecting performance is the intake
valve timing.
This would be supported by the fact that the BMW M3 Evolution cam gear
only affects the intake timing. It moves the powerband higher, and bump
the max hp as well, IIRC.
I have heard and mentioned before, but can't remember where from, that too
much overlap will result in sending modulations in the airflow back to the
fuel distributer airflow meter (flap). But then again, if you've got a
DOHC engine, you prolly have a hotwire instead of an airflow meter, I
think.
