stupid a4 shift knob question

On the recommendation of a couple folks on the list, I have purchased a
lovely Momo short Zebrano shift knob for my '98 A4QM Avant to replace
the butt-ugly and not particularly comfortable factory-installed knob. 
Question: When properly installed, does the snout on the knob face
forward or to the rear?  Rear facing would seem to make sense, and the
hand falls most comfortably to the knob in that position, but I have
been unable to find a photo of that or similar knobs on Autobahn Int'l
or any other Web site and the skimpy installaton guide that came with
the shifter is no help.  Which position is correct, if there is such a
thing as a correct position?  Thanks.
