Stock lights plus quads

All this posting about quad lights got me interested in experimenting with
the quad lights I have already, on an old 82 VW Jetta among my parts cars.
Dot quads, rectangular, halogen. A1, A2.

Today I took these light assemblies off my parts car, and tried fitting
them on my 87 5kcstq, but not in place of the stock lights. Why not use
them as auxiliary driving lights, on a separate circuit?

I found that the assemblies would fit on the front bumper, on both sides of
the license plate just below the color demarcation between the top black
area and the body color area, about half way down the side of the license
plate. This location exposes the assemblies to direct contact with other
vehicles...the lights sit out in front of the bumper surface.

Also, the same assemblies fit underneath the lower edge of the vertical
surface of the front bumper, just in front of the ventilated black
grillwork above the more solid body-colored spoiler. This location would
be protected from direct contact with other vehicles, and probably is the
most frequent location of auxiliary driving/fog lights.

A week ago I talked with Huw Powell <human@nh.ultranet.com> and Dave
Aukerman <mhauk@ccsdana.net> and Avi <avi@cosmoslink.net> and Stott
<HAREST@allenbrook.iix.com> and Bruce <bbell04@ibm.net> about substituting
quads for stock lights, and all ageed it was probably a good move.....but
why not _keep_ the stock lights and add a quad light bar along the lower
edge of the bumper?

Is it illegal, or potentially compromising to the integrity of my
electrical system?

Front view, where "X's" represent stock lights, and A1 A2 represent the quads:
When this feeble attempt at a diagram gets through all the software between
my computer and yours, it should look like a head-on view of a car.

So, whadaya think? Legal? Anybody tried it?
