My German-English dictionary (Schoeffler-Weis) gives one of the
meanings as "performance".  I hope you weren't misled as to exactly
what sort of performance a "Vortrag" is ...

The closest word to "Vortrag" in English is "presentation", in the sense
of someone standing at an overhead projector.  It also means
"performance", but in the sense of an artistic or theatrical
performance.
