An oil filter is not an oil filter is not an oil filter. There are
several grades of paper available to filter manufacturers, from the very
cheap to the very expensive. I was just discussing this with one of our
Product Development boys last week - he claims it's pretty scary what some
manufacturers are putting in their filters. In addition, I believe the OEM
filter has an internal relief valve to prevent the problem described above -
if the filter plugs, the valve pops open and sends oil to the engine. True,
it is unfiltered, but it is better than no oil at all.
I always use OEM filters. They are expensive but they are cheap
insurance IMHO.
