The cable from the handbrake pulls on a plate with a butterfly nut to
adjust the position.  Each side of the plate hooks onto one cable going to
the respective  rear caliper.  Look on the rear side of the calipers and
you should see a thick spring(this is the return spring) and a lever
hooking into the spring and the brake cable(terminated by a crimped on
ball.)  The lever pushes the caliper closed.  This mechanism is infamous
for failing(rusting up and seizing) and causing the brake to stick.  Mine
did this and burned up a rotor on one side of the car.  PITA.  I've never
found a solution; maybe complete disassembly and sandblasting the exposed
parts, then painting it all with rustoleum high temp paint, but that's a
lot of work...

One other mode of failure is moisture in the cable freezing and locking up
everything solid.
