air filter/starting problem fixed/described Thanks All '89 90Q

Thanks for all the suggestions. Most everyone had the right solution.- The
air intake boot, but not the clamps or seal but a metal hose that meets the
air intake boot from the bottom which came off when the boot was lifted.
The top of the metal hose was broken. Even after reseating the boot 3 or
four times I did not see the bottom hose. Reseating the boot is a big
enough pain as mine has a tendency to bend up one the underside -this is
what took most of my time because I was fixated on the fact it must be
leaking from one side. Also I just jammed the metal hose back up into the
air boot and it seems tight , but should I replace the connector- how
important is that connection?

I learned a few things as an audi rookie. 1. I already miss the volvo for
simplicity 2. Patience 3. Heed Advice and listen carefully 4. That saying
about if "it does not come out remove something else first" 5. The QList-
what more can I say- it saved me a lot trouble 6. Bentley manual is not
always a savior. In fact I think it is very poor detailing the air filter
area. I really hope that manual writers really take advantage of the new
technologies to create vrml/3d cd based manuals.

Again thanks very much
