suspension problem

 Hi

I just bought a car - an '85 audi 80 sport (1.8 injection) . It has
done 210k miles on original engine and has had a new cyl head about
40k miles ago and there' little smoke so I think it's ok. payed 400
gbp for the car and it has a problem with the front suspension (apart
from that and a very sharp clutch (which is fairly new!?)it's mint).
When I drove it first it's steering was very poor and made lots of
bad noises - one of the front shocks was seized and I planned on
getting this repaired cheaply. However when I got the car home
yesterday, I realised that the front suspensio was slightly highr
than the rear suspension. So I assummed that I'd have to find a
couple of the standard lower sport springs aswell as the shocks. On
speaking to a mechanic I suggested that I would know if the ride
height was changed at the front to gl spec by comparing a standard
sport spring to the one on already. He said however that the springs
were all the same height just stiffness that was different- This
leads me to wonder How I'm suposed to get the ride height back down
to standard sport spec at the front? - will I have to find the whole
front suspension system?? - or is my mechanic wrong and can I fit
sport springs and dampers to get the ride height back to the
original. I also read thet, to gain the lower height at the rear, for
the 80 sport, audi changed the position of the lower spring mount. -
The article didn't mention anything about the front so I assume the
basic suspension at the front on a sport is the same as on the gl bar
springs and shocks?
Do u have any ideas about how to regain the ride
height of my car? Hope someone can help.

Cheers,

Ed
